Bedside cots, also referred to as bassinets or co-sleepers are designed to let parents sleep close to their children at night without the risk of SIDS. However they are not suitable for use up to 6 months of age when your baby will need to move into a cot, or a moses basket.

Mehack, a MFM home tester, loved the fact that this model features a bassinet that can be used around the home. It also features a manual rocking feature. It was simple to put together, and it came with a travel bedside crib bag.

Size

Cots and cot beds differ in terms of size, with cots being smaller than cot beds. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However cots are generally intended for children who are the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots - large and standard - which can be converted into a toddler bed or cot. If you wish for your child (or children) to be able to sleep in a larger cot, it's a great idea to choose the larger one.

Jasmine is an MFM mother who tested the product at home, was pleased the fact that it was a little bigger than the typical Moses basket, but not too large for the baby's room. Jasmine says it's easy to get the baby into and out of the cot during evening feedings or to soothe, and that its quality is better than other cots she has seen that are cheap and flimsy.

Another home-based tester, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi is a versatile product it's a drop-off bassinet that you can move around the house, and it rocks too. It also has an option for inclining the reflux and a machine-washable liner that breathes. And it was shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for best bedside cot Cot Crib, Crib or Moses Basket. Unlike some International or European cot brands Lora is a cot that Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't have to buy a new mattress as your baby grows. However, it will require a specific bedding set (60x120cm). Find the ideal mattress for your cot here.

Height

When you are choosing a cot for your bed be sure to choose one that can be raised up to a level that is comfortable for you when feeding babies. It should also be able to be lowered down out of the way so that you can lift your baby up towards you during night feedings or for soothing. This is particularly useful in the event of recovering from a C section. For instance the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is how low you want the cot's base to be. Some mums find that it is easier to lift their children from standard Moses baskets when the base is situated at the lowest level, while some prefer a higher level to provide them with more stability. One of our mum testers stated that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It comes with a collapsible side you can push at the push of one button.

Be aware that a bedside or bassinet is only suitable until your baby is able to hold their head up without assistance typically around 6 months. This is due to the risk of being suffocated. It's also important to note that if you opt for a bedside or bassinet which can convert into a cot, you will need to start removing the sides when your child is ready for this to ensure that they don't get out of bed or get out of the bed.

Design

There are a variety of cribs for bedside use, ranging from basic to extravagant. The most luxurious models could include features like a built-in night light or a soothing center that plays music and sounds and offers two levels of vibration to help soothe your baby to sleep, or even the swivelling base which allows you to reach your child for feedings. You may also find some models that can be converted to a cot bed or toddler bed (or both), perfect when your child is ready to transition to a bigger bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, for example was awarded Bronze at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It is a swivelling base that allows you to take your baby to the crib and transfer them to the other side of the crib without having to get out of the bed. This is great for mothers who are recovering from Caesarean sections, or those who need to stay in bed for prolonged periods of time. Jasmine is an MFM mother who tested the product at home, stated that it was easy to operate and made it easier for her to reach her baby - especially after a c-section.

Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It also includes a machine-washable liner, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's slightly larger than some of the other cribs for bed we've tried, but it folds flat in its bag for travel, so it's quite compact when not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester, also acknowledged the crib's usefulness. She claimed that it was designed for both parents and infants. 'It has an excellent design that is very easy to manoeuvre and it is extremely sturdy. Its swivelling base is fantastic because it allows you to move the bassinet from side to side, and one of its sides can be opened down to ease access especially for mothers who are recovering from their C-sections,' she added.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main safety feature is that it can be easily raised or lowered so parents can reach their baby to feed or comfort them, or change his or his or her nappies. This is ideal for new mothers recovering from the C-section. Choose a model that allows you to lower one side with the push of a button so you can easily lift your baby without having to get out of bed. This is particularly important as your baby grows older and becomes more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation such as duvets and pillowcases which could cause your baby to become overheated.

The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to issues with the product that include gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of adding additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example the products would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at least the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements were not feasible or effective in reducing the amount of instances where infants are entrapped by the bedside rail and an adult bed.

The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR involved multiuse bedside crib sleepers which can be converted to other types of use, such as bassinets and play yards. Many commenters suggested that the CPSC add a second provision to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers that are multi-use that would allow them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that is removable. The attachment can be permanently connected or removed when the item is not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is currently reviewing these comments and others received in response to the NPR on sleep at night. The Commission will take into consideration these comments when it decides on the final rule which is expected to be released in the month of November 2021.
