Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots, also referred to as bassinets or co-sleepers are designed to let parents sleep close to their children at night without the risk of SIDS. However they are not suitable for use up to 6 months of age when your baby will need to move into a cot, or a moses basket.

Mehack, a MFM home tester, loved the fact that this model features a bassinet that can be used around the home. It also features a manual rocking feature. It was simple to put together, and it came with a travel bedside crib bag.

Size

Cots and cot beds differ in terms of size, with cots being smaller than cot beds. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However cots are generally intended for children who are the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots - large and standard - which can be converted into a toddler bed or cot. If you wish for your child (or children) to be able to sleep in a larger cot, it's a great idea to choose the larger one.

Jasmine is an MFM mother who tested the product at home, was pleased the fact that it was a little bigger than the typical Moses basket, but not too large for the baby's room. Unlike some International or European cot brands Lora is a cot that Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't have to buy a new mattress as your baby grows. Height

When you are choosing a cot for your bed be sure to choose one that can be raised up to a level that is comfortable for you when feeding babies. It should also be able to be lowered down out of the way so that you can lift your baby up towards you during night feedings or for soothing. This is particularly useful in the event of recovering from a C section. For instance the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is how low you want the cot's base to be. Some mums find that it is easier to lift their children from standard Moses baskets when the base is situated at the lowest level, while some prefer a higher level to provide them with more stability. Be aware that a bedside or bassinet is only suitable until your baby is able to hold their head up without assistance typically around 6 months. This is due to the risk of being suffocated. It's slightly larger than some of the other cribs for bed we've tried, but it folds flat in its bag for travel, so it's quite compact when not in use.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main safety feature is that it can be easily raised or lowered so parents can reach their baby to feed or comfort them, or change his or his or her nappies. This is ideal for new mothers recovering from the C-section. Choose a model that allows you to lower one side with the push of a button so you can easily lift your baby without having to get out of bed. The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to issues with the product that include gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of adding additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example the products would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at least the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements were not feasible or effective in reducing the amount of instances where infants are entrapped by the bedside rail and an adult bed.

The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR involved multiuse bedside crib sleepers which can be converted to other types of use, such as bassinets and play yards. Many commenters suggested that the CPSC add a second provision to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers that are multi-use that would allow them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that is removable. The attachment can be permanently connected or removed when the item is not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is currently reviewing these comments and others received in response to the NPR on sleep at night. The Commission will take into consideration these comments when it decides on the final rule which is expected to be released in the month of November 2021.
