Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to allow parents to snuggle with their infant at night without risk of SIDS. However they are not recommended for use up to 6 months when your baby will be required to be moved into a cot or moses basket.

Size
Cots are smaller than cots. They are smaller than. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However they are typically intended for children who are the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots, large and standard - which can be transformed into a toddler bed or cot. If you wish for your child (or children) to be able to sleep in a bigger cot, it's a great idea to choose the larger size.
MFM mum home tester Jasmine liked that this bedside cot was slightly larger than a Moses basket, but not too large for her baby's room. Jasmine says it's easy to get the baby bedside sleeper in and out of the cot for evening feedings or to soothe, and that its quality is superior to others she has seen that are cheap and flimsy.
Emily, another home tester, is awed by the versatility of the Maxi-Cosi Lora that is a lift-off, portable bassinet. It also rocks. It also has an option to tilt the reflux upwards and a machine-washable breathable liner. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. The Lora is a perfect fit for a South African cot mattress unlike some international or European brands. This means that you don't have to purchase a brand new mattress when your baby grows. However, it requires a special bespoke bedding set (60x120cm). Find the ideal mattress for your cot here.
Height
When selecting a cot for the bed choose one that can be elevated to a height that is comfortable for feeding your babies. It must also be lower out of the way, so you can lift up your baby to feed them at night or soothe him. This feature is especially useful when you are recovering from a C-section. The Next2me cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to an maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm, and the Knuma Hutch to 70cm.
Another thing to think about is how low you want the base of your cot. Some moms find it is easier to lift their infants from their standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest level, while some prefer a higher height to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular choice with one of our mum testers stating that it comes with a simple collapsible part that you can push down with the click of the button.
Be aware that a bedside crib travel cot or bassinet should not be used until your baby is able to hold their head up without assistance generally around 6 months. This is due to the danger of suffocation. It's also important to know that if you choose a bedside or bassinet which can be converted into a crib, you will need to remove the sides as soon as your child is ready for this to ensure they don't get out of bed or fall out of the bed.
Design
There are many different styles of cribs for bedside use, ranging from basic to lavish. Some of the most extravagant options include features like a built-in light and a soothing center that plays music and sound and has two levels to help ease your baby back to sleep or an adjustable footrest that allows you to reach your child when you need to feed them. Some models can be converted into the toddler bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.
The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, for example has won Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It has a swivelling bottom that lets you take your baby to the crib and transfer them to the other side of the crib without having to get out of bed. This is ideal for new mothers recovering from Caesarean sections or who have to remain in bed for long periods of time. MFM mum home tester Jasmine was awed by this feature, stating that it was simple to use and made her baby much more manageable especially after a c-section.
Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the category of Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket and is equipped with an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's bigger than other bedside cribs that we've tested, but it folds into its travel bag, making it compact when not in use.
MFM mom home tester Leya loved the practicality of this bedside crib, she explained how it was created with babies and parents in mind. 'It has an excellent design that is incredibly easy to manoeuvre and it is super-sturdy. Its swivelling base is fantastic because it lets you move the bassinet from side to side and one of its sides can be lowered down to ease access especially for new mothers who are recovering from their C-sections', she said.
Safety
A large bedside cot's main security feature is that it can be easily adjusted or moved so that parents can reach their child to feed, comfort or change his or her nappy. This makes it ideal for mothers who are recovering from a c-section. Choose a model that lets you lower one side at the push of a button so you can easily lift your baby up without having to get out of the bed. This is essential, especially as your child grows and becomes more mobile. You'll also want to be careful not to add anything to the crib that increases the chance of suffocation, or injury, including pillows and duvets. These can cause babies to overheat.
The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to issues with the product that include gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside cot for twins sleeper (12 incidents), fabric-sided enclosed openings (11) and consumer disassembly (6 incidents).
In its NPR, the CPSC examined the possibility of additional requirements for sleepers in bed, such as the requirement that they meet the minimum side height requirement for bassinets or at the very least, meet the maximum height requirement for the lowered side rail. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements were not practical or effective in reducing number of instances in which infants are trapped by the bedside rail and an adult bed.
The majority of the incidents covered in the NPR focused on multi-use bedside sleepers which can be converted to different types of furniture, like bassinets or play yards. Several commenters suggested the CPSC add an alternative option to the proposed rule for bedside crib or cot sleepers with multiple uses that would allow them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that can be removed. The attachment can be permanently connected or removed when the product is not being used as a bassinet for babies.
The CPSC is currently reviewing the comments and other suggestions received in response to the NPR regarding bedside sleeping. The Commission will be examining these comments when deciding on the final rule which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
